Groot Gamsberg Ranch
The ranch is situated 126 km south west of Windhoek City. Formerly a cattle ranch, Robin and Pauline Hurt have removed the cattle fences and have built up the herds of Springbok, Red Hartebeest, Ostrich, Oryx and Blesbok. Mountain zebra and Kudu migrate from the nearby mountains and Warthog, Meerkats, Klipspringer and many other animal and bird species flourish. Leopard and cheetah numbers have increased, and caracal, bat eared foxes and jackal abound. Even rare aardwolf and aardvark can be seen from time to time. The landscape of the ranch is stupendous, and varied, with granite kopjes, bush and grass veld and tumbled mountains. There are unique features such as a Quiver tree (aloe dichotoma) forest in “the badlands”, and the table top Gamsberg Mountain overlooking the ranch. This is Namibia’s third highest mountain (2349 m) and is accompanied by Little Gamsberg Mountain. Views of these mountains from the ranch house are memorable, especially the amazing sunsets. There are several dams with interesting bird life, unique plant species and a feeling of privacy in the wilderness. The climate at the ranch ranges from freezing on winter nights to 35 degrees C on hot days. The atmosphere is considered to be the cleanest in the world and the area is famous for stargazing and astronomy. Groot Gamsberg Mountain used to be leased by the famous Max Planck astronomy Foundation in Germany.
Robin and Pauline have renovated the old farm house which contains four double bedrooms (ensuite), and a small cottage nearby. An ideal safari group would be 3 to 4 couples. The house has a wrap around verandah, and is your comfortable and friendly home from home.
