ENGLAND
Driven shooting is a passion of Robin Hurt's. His enthusiasm for this sport has taken Robin and his guests shooting throughout Britain and Europe over the past 30 years. Robin has experienced the very best driven shooting available, not only in England, Scotland and Wales but also in Spain and Czechoslovakia. In his opinion and experience, Devon is quite simply the best shooting in England.

DEVON, ENGLAND
Devon is renowned for it's driven pheasant shooting in glorious countryside. In particular, Devon has the reputation of producing the most challenging high birds, a worthy test for the best of guns. A good shot can expect to fire 4 cartridges for every bird, which means you will be doing a lot of shooting.

THE SHOOTS
Robin has chosen excellent estates in Devon for these shoots including Powderham Castle, Gnaton Estate, Lyneham Park, Ugbrooke Park, Chargot, Molland, Oakfoard and Wiscombe Park, among others. Because of Devon's terrain, which consists of hills and deep valleys, Robin prefers parties of 6 or 7 participating guns on the shoots and, as such, they are planned accordingly to give everyone good positions throughout the day's shooting. However, if requested, arrangements can be made for teams of 8 guns as well.

THE BAG
The anticipated bag is from 250 to 500 birds per day. The days are double gun days with loaders assisting. The pheasant are driven by experienced beaters to provide excellent sporting birds. Sometimes partridge, woodcock and duck may also be shot. For safety reasons no ground game - hares, rabbits or foxes are allowed.

A SHOOTING DAY
Four drives usually take place before lunch and two more in the afternoon. Excellent shoot lunches for shooters and companions are provided at the homes of the host and for those interested there is an opportunity of looking around some of the oldest castles and historical homes in England.

Area & Accommodation
Widecombe Manor is about four hours by road from London. There are very good train connections from London's Paddington Station to Newton Abbot in Devon, which takes three hours.
Widecombe Manor is a beautiful Victorian home, most conveniently situated in Dartmoor for your shooting. The rooms mostly have en-suite bathrooms and are warm and comfortable.

The cuisine is excellent. Evenings are as formal or informal as the shooting party may wish. Usually ladies wear evening or cocktail dresses and the men smoking jackets or suits.

Non-shooters accompanying guns, who may not wish to go out shooting each day, can have a most enjoyable experience relaxing at the Manor, which has beautiful grounds for walks and it's own private Deer Park, or visiting local craft centres, cathedrals and other famous attractions in Dartmoor.

Firearms & Licences
Advice on guns, licensing, ammunition, insurances and shooting clothes will be given once a group is booked. Shoots are based on an exclusive group and individual guns are not normally accepted.
Insurance - participants are advised to ensure they have third party insurance to cover all aspects of shooting sports. The shooting estates insist on this. This insurance is available direct from The Countryside Alliance, 367 Kennington Road, London, SE11 4PT, England.
